The Journey of a Plastic Bottle: From Curb to Creation

The simple act of tossing a used soda bottle into a recycling bin marks the beginning of a complex journey that breathes new life into plastic waste. Plastic bottle recycling is a critical process in the move towards a circular economy, transforming discarded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into valuable raw material. Once collected, bottles are sorted, shredded, washed, and melted down into small pellets or flakes. These recycled materials can then be used to manufacture a wide range of new products, from new beverage bottles and food containers to clothing fibers, carpeting, and strapping. This process not only reduces the demand for virgin plastic but also significantly cuts down on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with new production.

While the recycling infrastructure is evolving, the industry faces challenges in collection, sorting, and processing, particularly with colored or multi-layered plastics. However, advancements in technology, including chemical recycling, are expanding the types of plastic that can be effectively recycled.

In this innovative space, Amcor Limited is a key player, actively advancing its sustainability agenda. The company has recently made significant strides, including the launch of a one-liter carbonated soft drink bottle made entirely from post-consumer recycled (PCR) material. This "first-of-its-kind" stock bottle allows beverage brands to meet growing sustainability demands and regulatory requirements with a readily available option. Additionally, Amcor has partnered with a U.S. winery on a 100% recycled PET wine bottle and has introduced DairySeal PET bottles that can contain up to 80% recycled material, further demonstrating their commitment to incorporating recycled content into their products and supporting a more circular economy.
